SRMS Band
Welcome to the Smokey Road Middle School Band Program. Smokey Road Bands are comprised of the 6th Grade Band, Concert Band, and Symphonic Band. Each of these bands meet daily as part of the connections courses offered throughout the school day. Due to the large number of 6th grade students that register to be in band, the 6th Grade Band is split into two class periods. Students who register for band in the 6th grade should be able to commit to one full school year of band studies. It is in the 6th grade where fundamental skills are learned and therefore it is essential to complete the full year in order to transition with ease into the Concert Band or Symphonic Band.

Topics of Study
The Smokey Road Band Program is built upon the core fundamentals of music; good tone, good ensemble sound, solid technical facility of the instrument, solid sight-reading skills, and rhythmic accuracy. Throughout the year, we will continue to forge a strong musical foundation that will be the basis of the student’s band experience. The Topics of Study for the band are located in the student’s Power in Progress Book, method books, and class handouts.

F.A.Q.
1. What does a student need to be in band? A student only needs three basic things to be in band. 1. Instrument. 2. Band Polo, and 3. Band book!

That is it! We help students get these things when band starts in August. Parents are strongly urged to not make musical purchases until our band parent meeting in August. We want to get the students in band class and have them try out the instruments first in order to make certain that they have the best instrument for their needs.

2. Is band expensive? No. First thing to know is that NO student is ever turned down because of money. We have a limited number of school instruments to help students who may have a difficult financial situation. The average cost to rent or rent-to- own an instrument is $25 to $30. The Band Polo and Band book are $15 or less. Best part of all, you will never have to purchase an instrument or a polo again. Band is a class at Smokey Road and for this reason; it is open to ALL students.

3. What if my student does not know how to play an instrument? In 6th grade, the course is beginning band. Don’t worry, we will teach them how to play even if they don’t know a single note!

 ~SRMS Chorus~

Smokey Road Middle School Chorus program is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Each grade level meets daily as part of the connections courses offered at the school. Students who register for chorus in the 6th grade should be able to commit to one full school year of choral studies. It is in the 6th grade where fundamental skills that enable singers to perform two and three part music in the 7th and 8th grades.

The voice is an instrument, and each one is unique. My goal is to provide a nurturing environment in which students can explore the potential of their personal instrument. Throughout the middle school years, all voices begin to transition from a childhood (unchanged) into a matured (changed) one. This transition is not always noticed in all singers, but it does take place over a period of about 4 years. Developing proper vocal technique through choral singing will help in establishing the adult singing voice. As a music educator, I hope to instill in each student a love for singing that will last beyond the middle school years.

Topics of Study
This course emphasizes individual concepts of vocal production, as well as choral techniques appropriate for a large ensemble. Students will develop an understanding of musical accuracy in performance skills and musical sound through movement. Students will perform, create, and analyze choral music and comprehensive musicianship will be taught through the study of varied choral repertoire.
